Washington trooper shot, killed in traffic stop

Killed while working: Trooper Tony Radulescu was fatally shot on Thursday when he pulled a car over during a traffic stop near Bremerton, Washington

GORST, Wash. -- A Washington State Patrol trooper was shot dead during a traffic stop early Thursday morning with the suspect still at large, the Kitsap Sun reported.

Authorities were alerted when the trooper, who made a stop just before 1:00am local time in Gorst on the shores of Puget Sound, did not respond to subsequent checks from dispatchers.

Officials sent to the scene found the trooper had gunshot wounds, state patrol spokesman Russ Winger told the newspaper. He died later at Tacoma General Hospital.

The suspect's vehicle was found in nearby South Kitsap but the suspect remains at large.

Police and state patrol officers are searching for the suspect and a police dog tracking unit is also on the scene, according to the newspaper.

Roads around the area were closed following the incident.
