NYPD investigating Carlisle Brigham death on Lower East Side

Carlisle Brigham

A 29-year-old woman died after falling down a flight of stairs in her lower East Side building Monday morning, the victim of either a freak accident or a brutal homicide, police said.

Cops were trying to determine how Carlisle Brigham, the daughter of the city’s former budget director, ended up on a second-floor landing with a massive slash in her neck.

Brigham was found crumpled on the floor landing of the Orchard St. tenement about 11:05 a.m.

Neighbors administered CPR.

“I knew something had gone seriously wrong when I flipped her over,” Mizanur Rahman, 19. “There was blood in nose, there was blood coming out of the mouth and a huge gash on her chin.”

Brigham was rushed to Beth Israel Medical Center but could not be saved. An autopsy will be performed Tuesday.

Former Mayor Ed Koch knew the victim, and her father, James Brigham Jr. was the city’s budget director from 1978 to 1981.

“He called me to tell me,” Koch said of James Brigham Jr. “He was sobbing. I broke down and cried.

“They are wonderful people. She was absolutely extraordinarily beautiful,” Koch added. “It just shook me as if I were kicked by a horse. It’s just awful.”

Her father is currently chairman of Warson Capital Partners, an investment bank in St. Louis.

Last August, Carlisle Brigham married Anthony Champalimaud, 34, vice president of development for YTL Hotels and Properties. He also works for Champalimaud Design, a high-end design firm owned by his mother.

He is believed to have been working in London at the time of the death.
